Background Information on the Bosnian Genocide:
After World War II, Bosnia became a part the Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia. An election was held and it led to the government splitting between parties representing three ethnicities: Bosnian Muslims, Serbs, and the Croations. The Serbs leader, Radovan Karadzic, withdrew from the government and the Serbs made their own. In 1992, the Serbs opposed the breakup of Yugoslavia which started a war against the Slovenians. The war lasted 10 days and at the end of which Slovenia had achieved independence. On March 3, 1992, after a vote, President Izetbegovic proclaimed Bosnia’s independence. This was the beginning of Yugoslavia breaking lasting until 2001 and was characterized by a series of violent ethnic battles.
